Core by Richard Serra

Serra is a formidable sculptor. His work is challenging and minimalist, which I like. And his use of steel is what actually inspired me to have the hotel [Chambers] wrapped in Cor-Ten steel. It’s a material he uses quite a bit. Core is on the General Mills campus at the intersection of Interstate 394 and General Mills Boulevard. General Mills has one of the greatest corporate art collections in the country. The outdoor works are open to the public anytime. They have occasionally provided tours of their indoor collection by special request.

Frida KahloThe Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Walker Art Center

If you are reading this before January 20, go to the Kahlo exhibit. Go right now. The sheer fact that the Walker was able to organize this exhibit (with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and have it premier here underscores why the Walker is one of the top contemporary art museums in the country. It took three years to assemble the collection. As for Kahlo, there’s never been such a comprehensive exhibit of her innovative work and her life.

The Weisman Art Museum (Yes, the whole thing)

I’m referring to the architecture of the building itself—which is a work of art and has become an icon for the city. Frank Gehry designed the Weisman before he did the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. That building gave Bilbao international fame. And now that Gehry is working on the Weisman’s expansion (due to open in 2009), I can’t wait to see it and what more it’ll do for Minneapolis.
